Our friends at @imladrisfarm handle shipping of jams, hot sauce, Bloody Mary mix, coffee, cookbooks, and mugs for us. Their facility was completely flooded during the hurricane. They have relocated and are back up and running, but it is taking a while to get stock remade. We’re past the Christmas shipping date, but hope you’ll consider purchasing this winter, when it’s really quiet at the restaurant. More on this later. - Alice

Some of our staff went and broke things! At @thebreakroom_avl that is. They found it a great way to relieve stress accumulated over these last few months.

From the garden @sunnypointcafe … we are thankful for each of you that walked through our garden, asked questions, shared your knowledge, and spent some time enjoying it this season. Your joy is part of why we care for this space. We also harvest quite a bit of produce and edible flowers to support the restaurant and bakery, and yes even through the winter.

Winter is also our time to plan for next year’s crops, sort saved seeds, browse seed catalogs, prune, repair beds, mulch up perennials, and finish repairs including from hurricane damage. Thanks for following along.

Late fall harvesting is always special. It is a bo

Late fall harvesting is always special. It is a bonus before the deep cold of winter sets in and we either use row cover to protect plants until the spring or say goodbye and let the season take them. We planted out late season kale and chard, late. Combine that with the super dry October and warm weather with lots of cabbage worms we had and I’m honestly surprised we got this much harvest. Thank you Jamie from @chlorophyllavl for adding fresh water to our garden rain tank today. With no significant rain since hurricane Helene we were almost out and our winter crops are thirsty.

Our rain barrels do more than collect and hold rainwater for use in our garden. They help control runoff and flooding, and we were able to pull water from them to boil up for dish washing long before water totes and fill stations were in place around the city. We used approximately 1,800 gallons from the various tanks around the garden for the restaurant in those initial days after the storm. This was significant in allowing us to serve out free meals during that time.

The water added to one of our tanks today is fresh spring water which the plants will love. We are super grateful to our neighbors at Chlorophyll for helping us out. If you’re looking to add plants to your life we highly recommend their shop.

We are using potable water in a five gallon container with a special pump that feeds this drinking water directly into our coffee and espresso machines. We refill the water from our large container of potable water as needed throughout the day.

The last few weeks have been incredibly challenging, to say the least, and we know that there is a long road ahead for our region as a whole. We’re endlessly thankful to all the community partners and businesses that helped us have the ability to serve free meals during our downtime. It was meaningful to our staff to be able to put out quality meals to support our community. The teamwork and support for each other our crew has is truly outstanding. Spade to Spoon

Spade to Spoon is our Sunny Point Café version of “garden to table.” Immediately next to our restaurant and bakery we have a large kitchen garden where we grow a wide variety of produce, herbs and flowers to provide our chefs with the freshest of ingredients. Our kitchen garden serves as an example of productive urban land use, is educational and satisfying not only for the Sunny Point Café gang of employees, but for our lovely patrons from near and far, and the community of West Asheville itself. Growing local and organic produce is ecologically sound and aesthetically pleasing. Please take a walk through our garden next time you visit and see for yourself.
