I’m excited to announce that our garden has been certified as a butterfly level pollinator habitat, which is the highest level awarded! Big thanks to all the previous garden staff that worked towards this goal, @avlgreenworks who manage the local program, @westashevillegardenstroll for the grant we received that helped us reach this milestone, and to our amazing owners @sunnypointcafe that know a garden space is much more than a place to grow produce for the kitchen. We celebrated our 20 Year Anniversary with an amazing dinner done by Michelle Alexander (GM), Jeff Knox (Asst. GM), and Kyle Hughes (Chef). It was an awesome turn out and we hope to be doing more dinners in the future like this. Congratulation to the Harper and Rabb Family for 20 YEARS of being AWESOME.

Found multiples of these crazy looking caterpillar

Found multiples of these crazy looking caterpillars in the garden today. Called saddleback for their markings, the caterpillars are one of the most interesting looking caterpillars in our garden. Look, but don’t touch, if you see one. You’ve been warned. Update: after completing inventory we find that multiple shovels, rakes, hoes, pitchforks, and our post hole digger were also taken from a locked shed. All tools have a Sunny Point sticker and pink spray paint on them. Please keep an eye out. Any tips are appreciated.

This morning at 5:12-5:22am this dude helped himself to multiple bags of our raised bed mix and mulch. He lifted them over our locked gate, loaded them into our city trash can and pulled it away. He snooped around to see what else he could take and tried to get into our garden shed. If you have any information about who this guy is, please let us know. Super sad and discouraging to come in this morning

Super sad and discouraging to come in this morning and find that someone helped themselves to an entire bed of lemon drop peppers that were well on their way to ripening. They were green and plentiful and would have turned lemon yellow and been harvested to use in one of our specials in the upcoming weeks. Instead, the plants were damaged and six months of tending to the plants is gone. NOT cool. Don’t steal from our garden. We can direct you to resources if you are in need, but taking from our garden is not the way. Spade to Spoon

Spade to Spoon is our Sunny Point Café version of “garden to table.” Immediately next to our restaurant we have a large kitchen garden where we grow a wide variety of produce, herbs and flowers to provide our chefs with the freshest of ingredients. Our kitchen garden serves as an example of productive urban land use, is educational and satisfying not only for the Sunny Point Café gang of employees, but for our lovely patrons from near and far, and the community of West Asheville itself. Growing local and organic produce is ecologically sound and aesthetically pleasing. Please take a walk through our garden next time you visit and see for yourself.
